Robot vacuum cleaners with Alexa voice command support are cheaper than you think. It’s now time to put your feet up and ask your robot cleaner to take care of the dust on the floor.

Not only do these robot vacuum cleaners work seamlessly with Alexa allowing you to simply ask the robot vacuum to start or stop cleaning and go back to the charging base, like all robot vacuum it cleans the floor really well.

Some assembly and configuration may be required out of the box but nothing too difficult. Follow the instructions in the owner’s manual to get your vacuum cleaner ready. To get your robot vacuum cleaner to follow your verbal commands, a few extra steps is required.

How to Enable Alexa Voice Control on My Smart Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Here is what you need to do to get your ‘work with Alexa’ robot vacuum cleaner ready for your voice commands. Note, some models support both Alexa and Google Assistant. The steps here are for Alexa only.

  1. First, download the free companion app for your robot vacuum. This is used to configure and connect the robot vacuum to the home’s wireless network and Internet.
  2. It is also where you will sign-up to create an account with the manufacturer. This will be used to enable the skill on Alexa later. And yes, the app along will let you give your robot a unique name, remotely control the robot vacuum, create cleaning schedule and check charging or battery status.
  3. For the next part, you will need to have at least one Echo device and an Amazon account
  4. Start by adding the skill for the robot vacuum using an Alexa app. Which skill? Consult the manual for the right one to add.
  5. Enable the skill by linking the account created when signing up using the manufacturer’s app.
  6. Once enabled, remember to check the skill description to understand the sort of command you can use with Alexa. Some skills offer helpful hints. You can ask Alexa to tell you what these are.
  7. Test your robot vacuum using these recommended commands.
  8. If you have more than one robot in the home from the same manufacturer, issue the command for each of these separately.

Voice Commands Supported

There are usually only a handful of commands supported. Don’t be overzealous by asking your robot vacuum to do the laundry or bring you your coffee. Typical supported commands include but not limited to:

  1. Ask the robot vacuum to clean or start cleaning
  2. Ask the robot vacuum to pause or stop cleaning
  3. Ask the robot vacuum to go home or return to charging base
  4. Ask Alexa to find my robot

Some robot may support more than the commands above but these are the basic. For everything else, you can consult the companion app.

How does Smart Robot Vacuum Cleaners Work

Apart from using voice commands above, there are three ways to start cleaning.

Alexa Voice Control: once the skill is enabled and the robot vacuum is switched on and connected, use the start cleaning command to set it going.

Scheduled Cleaning: use the companion app to set cleaning schedule up to 7 days a week. Set the start time, and the robot will clean for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours before returning to base.

Remote Controlled: use the dedicated remote controller or app to manoeuvre and drive the robot vacuum. Both options let you control all aspect of cleaning i.e. edge cleaning, spot cleaning, automatic cleaning, quick cleaning, manual cleaning, suction power

Push Button: there is usually a button on top of the robot vacuum. Clicking this will start the automatic cleaning process. Clicking on it again will stop the cleaning.

Limitations & Precautions

Long tassels on the edge of the a rug or carpet can get caught by the roller brush. Fold the tassel edges down to hide it to prevent tangling and damage to the robot vacuum.

Spaces lower or just around the height of the vacuum cleaner can cause the vacuum cleaner to get stuck. Use boundary tape or place a physical barrier to block off the problem areas.

Floor must be dry with no puddles of water as it run a risk of electronic damage to the unit/

Remove power cords and small objects from the floor. Remove soft furnishing, shirts, handkerchieves, socks etc off the floor.

Free up the floor space, if dining chairs are stackable or foldable, stack or fold them for minimal footprint, allowing the robot more free space to roam and clean.

Place barriers or boundary tape around fire place to prevent the robot vacuum cleaner from going near the fire. Use boundary tape to keep children’s play area off limits as there might be small items and toys.

For deeper clean, especially on carpets, the robot vacuum will need to be used in conjunction with a conventional vacuum cleaner be it the canister or upright variety. Depending on how dirty the floor is, go around with a conventional vacuum once every two to three weeks. Leave the robot vacuum to take care of everything in between.

Regular emptying, due to the size of the dust collector, it will need to be emptied on a daily basis or once every couple of days. The filters may need vacuuming too to ensure that it is not clogged up. I use a small handheld vacuum to clean the main filtering net after emptying the bin.

Remove hair wrapped around the brushes. We also found that hair be it pets’ of humans’ tend to get caught and wrap around the brushes. This is usually on the main central brush but also on the edge brushes. Manufacturers include mini combs and cutters to help you remove the hair. Just with regular emptying of the dust bin, you may need to do the same with hair that the brushes picked up, cutting and disposing them after every session.
