Lego, that simple brick building toy of all our childhoods, has undoubtedly gone beyond simple child’s play. As all of us have grown up, so has Lego right alongside us. And as we desperately introduce our old bricks or newer sets to our offspring, it is always secretly in hopes that we too get to relive our childhood once again.
There are set for kids, sets for teens and then there are sets for us grown-up kids who despite donning power suits for work and needing bifocals to read, still itch to get our hands on these toys. Of course, these days it’s beyond building the castle, the house with see through doors and windows or even the space station. The things that make us want to hand over our cash readily are the cool sets that Lego have imaginatively managed to tangle and tantalise us with.
Here are just some of them that we’ve come across. We’ve focused mainly on the one-offs collectibles leaving aside the Star Wars, Avengers and Harry Potter range that keep expanding.
Any fan of the Friends TV Series will love this Central Perk Building Kit. Set up as a studio set complete with lighting the set comes with mini-figures of the main characters, Chandler Bing, Monica Geller, Ross Geller, Rachel Green, Joey Tribiani, Phoebe Buffay and Gunther. To add to the fun, Phobe’s Lego doppelgänger actually has her own guitar as well – Smelly cat… anyone?
The set consists of 1070 pieces and when built will measure 11 cm high, 29 cm wide and 22 cm deep. It is the perfect toy to recreate your favourite and most memorable scenes from Friends.

Leonard’s and Sheldon’s living room in the Big Bang Theory is the place where almost everything happens. The gang gets together here in every episode, apart from the occasional foray to Penny’s apartment, the comic book store, their offices at Caltech, Raj and Howard’s homes. Most key scenes happen in this apartment living room.
A relatively small kit with only 144 pieces, the final build measures 8cm high, 22 cm wide and 12 cm deep.
Like the Friends kit, The Big Bang Theory Building Kit also started out as a Lego Ideas contribution. Leonard and Sheldon’s living room was a collaborative project between Alatariel and Glenbricker
Netflix Original hit series Stranger Things Byers’ house and The Upside down have been immortalised in a lego box set specifically for fans and kids aged 16+. With 2287 pieces, this is a large kit that when complete stands at 32 cm tall, 44 cm wide and 21 cm deep.
The set includes 8 Stranger Things characters Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Lucase Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, Will Byers, Joyce Byers, Chief Jim Hopper and the Demogorgon.
The amazing thing about this set is that you can flip it round to create two different worlds – The real world and the Upside Down. Hoppers police truck is also included with a removable roof.
Similar to all Lego sets, these are compatible with other original Lego sets for further creative expansion and building.
This Lego box set features not just one, but three variations of the Delorean Time Machines from cult-movies series Back to the Future. Each Delorean was responsible for carry both Marty and Doc to the past and the future in each of the shows. Although each version of the car had slight variations depending on the ‘era’ that the car was built or travelling from.
This particular Lego set features the Delorean variations with opening doors, fold-up wheels, the flux capacitor, time travel display, 2 license plates and Marty’s skateboard. It also includes an extra engine and wheels. At 401 pieces it is a relatively large set for a car.
‘There’s something strange, in the neighbourhood’ The classic Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters is every fans dream Lego build. Complete with everyone of the team in the original movie and the ever friendly ghost Slimer, the pink ghost and the blue ghost. This set comes complete with proton packs that attach to the back of each Ghostbuster and even the fireman’s pole so that each character can slide down the pole.
The Lego Ghostbusters Ecto-1 is the perfect tribute and a great addition to the Ghostbusters firehouse. This set at 5:08 pieces includes four mini figures complete with proton packs and other paranormal detection equipment. The echo – one also has a removable roof, tracking computer and the car seat up to 3 of the mini figures. This is the perfect complement to the Lego Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters kit.
Following the reboot in 2016, Lego has also released the Lego Ghostbusters Ecto-1 & 2 75828 featuring the all new cast and new nemesis.
UPDATE: LEGO Creator Ghostbusters ECTO-1 10274
The latest Ghostbusters ECTO-1 model from Lego is the 2352 pieces building set, a full-size model measuring 22.91-inch long, 14.88-inch wide and 4.65-inch tall. The LEGO Creator Ghostbusters ECTO-1 10274 is for big adults, or 18 years old and older. Fans of the original Ghostbusters movie series will appreciate the level of detail on this model. It comes with roof rack complete with accessories and ladder, gunner seat that deploys from the side of the car and mobile ghost trap that can be launched from the back of the car with a lever. What is even more amazing is what you get when you pop-up the hood. Here is where you will find the engine of the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor.
The model is released in conjunction with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, another reboot that follows the original Ghostbusters and their legacy, the original banged up ECTO-1 above.
The Aston Martin DB5 first appeared as James Bond’s car in Goldfinger. This iconic vehicle subsequently went on to appear in several more Bond movies after that, with its latest appearance in the 2020 No Time to Die.
The 1295 pieces in this set go on to build a model that is 10cm high 30 cm long and 12cm wide. When complete this Lego DB5 features car doors that open to reveal all the gadgets and gizmos one has come to expect to find in James Bond scars from injectable seats to rotating number plates, retractable computer and even an integrated phone.
This is a definite must have for any James Bond fan.
8. Lego Technic 42111 Fast and Furious Dom’s Dodge Charger Racing Car (Collector’s Set)
Dom’s Dodge Charger race car is a detailed replica of the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T designed and created in collaboration with Dodge and Universal Studios. At 35.4 cm wide and 37.8 cm long, this large model comes complete with a hood that actually opens. The engine includes moving pistons, the wishbone suspension and steering system and an air blower. The V8 engine includes to nitro-boosters for extra power. The detail in this model includes a fire extinguisher for the car cockpit.
With 1077 pieces, this is the perfect build for every Fast and Furious fan and serves both as a display unit to show off, or an exciting imaginative toy to recreate exciting car chase scenes from Fast and Furious.
Flintstones, meet the Flintstones, They’re the modern stone-age family. The Flintstones Lego Ideas kit is the perfect replica of Fred and Wilma Flintstone’s home in Bedrock. Complete with their iconic rolling-stone car, and mini figures of Fred and Wilma along with their best friends, Barney and Betty Rubble.
The Lego Flintstones model home comes with a removable roof and an opening front door. Fred and Wilma’s home is furnished with curtains, a sofa, a TV, coffee table and fruit bowl, a kitchen sink and a host of different accessories from flower pots to milk bottles. Also included in the set are a post box and a palm tree. Unusual for Lego, the Flintstone’s car actually comes with a fabric covering.
Although this is a relatively small set with only 748 pieces and a final build size for the house of 12 cm high, 16cm wide and 12 cm deep and the car at 6 cm high, 11 cm long and 7 cm wide, it promises to be tons of fun for any fan of the Flintstones in Bedrock.
Voltron the ultimate legendary defender who always triumphed over evil is back in Lego form. True to its origins of 5 lions, this amazing set features each of the lions individually and then allows them to be collectively transformed and combined to form the various parts of Voltron.
The complete Voltron model stands at over 40 cm high and 21 cm wide. Each of the lions differ slightly in size with the largest being the black lion at 17cm high, 22 cm long and 15 cm wide, while the yellow and blue lions are 8cm high, 21 cm long and 8 cm wide and the green and red lions measure 8cm high, 18 cm long and 5 cm wide.
The blue and yellow lions form the legs while red and green lions form the arms and the black lion forms the head and torso. In its combined Voltron form, the robot has posable head, shoulders, arms and wrists, but the legs are not posable. The model also comes with Voltron’s sword and shield.
At 2321 pieces, this large set promises to be lots of fun for fans of the animated series and its new younger fans.
The iconic Simpsons House is recreated in great detail in its Lego version. Complete with the Empire Simpson family including Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa and baby Maggie call mother the house is built with hinges to allow it to be opened up to reveal the entire Simpsons household in detail. The set includes small details such as Bart’s skateboard ramp and Marge’s pink sedan. It even includes the Simpsons friendly neighbour Flanders and his barbecue pit.
The roof opens up to reveal Homer and Marge’s family bedroom and Maggie’s crib. Then there’s also Bart’s and Lisa’s bedrooms, the kitchen and the iconic living room with Homer’s most favourite TV set.
At 2523 pieces this is a large set and includes a total of six mini figures. It is the perfect set for any Simpsons fan.
Apu’s memorable Kwik-E-Mart in The Simpsons is brought to life with well-stocked shelves, a removable roof and the ability to remove the rear walls for easy access. With 6 minifigures, Homer, Marge and Bart are able to browse the detailed filled shelves while Apu stands at hte ready behind the counter.
Snake a.k.a Jailbird is also at the ready to lift a few choice items while Chief Wiggum is hot on his tail with his police car.

Few things are as fun as Lego, and fewer still are reminiscent of childhood. Lego has certainly hit the mark with many of these models as it’s once young fans have grown in to higher income earners, eager and willing to both relive their childhood memories and introduce their children to the fun and memories of their younger days.
